Cold Formed Steel Barn in Panama City, Florida

When a resident of Panama City, Florida, needed a steel barn, he turned to Metal Building Outlet, which delivered this cold-formed steel building kit in February 2023.

Metal Building Outlet worked closely with the customer to tailor the metal barn to meet his needs, adding large doors to accommodate cars or farm equipment and exterior overhangs that create covered outdoor space along all four walls. Airy, versatile and attractive, the cold-formed metal building has a traditional barn look thanks to exterior paint and trim, wrought-iron doors and aesthetic elements and gives the owner a safe, dry place to work, store animals or equipment, or otherwise use as needed.

The buyer opted for cold-formed construction, which is more economical and sustainable than rigid framing and sheeting. Cold-formed steel components are also more resistant to rust, making them well-suited for Florida and other areas prone to high humidity. They also take less time to form and deliver, leading to faster construction and shipping times for owners.

Steel barn specs & features

Standing 45’x110’x16’8”, the metal barn has an open, column-free interior and high ceilings, making it ideal for housing large items.  A rugged Galvalume gable roof with a modest 3:12 pitch provides protection from the Florida elements, and the barn has the following door openings throughout.

  • (1) 8’x10’ overhead door opening
  • (1) 14’x14’ overhead door opening
  • (6) 18’x8’ overhead sectional door openings
  • (2) 3070 walk doors with cylindrical lever lock sets

The steel barn’s exterior walls also have 2’ overhangs, creating additional covered storage or work space outside of the building.

The barn owner verified building codes with the local building department when ordering the building and MBO engineered it to meet or beat them, adding a high, 135-mph wind speed rating in consideration of the strong storms and occasional hurricanes that come through the area.

A cost-effective alternative to traditional steel construction

Cold-formed metal barns and buildings have exploded in popularity in recent years, with many buyers choosing them because they have shorter construction and delivery times and lower shipping and foundational costs. Despite these clear benefits, cold-formed steel buildings tend to be more cost-effective than traditional, rigid-frame buildings, making them an increasingly common choice for those looking to erect buildings for personal, recreational, commercial or other use.
