DIY Metal Building Kits Guide

DIY metal building kits can be a great option if you’re looking to build a shop, garage, hangar, metal barn or another type of steel structure, and taking the time to prepare properly reduces the chances of problems or delays arising along the way. By planning ahead, you can simplify the permitting and construction processes and erect and utilize your building much faster than you would otherwise.

An important first step involves assessing what you need based on how you plan to use the building. Once you have a sense of the size and amenities you want, you can move forward with these additional steps in the planning process.

1. Research zoning laws and building codes.

Before buying your building, make sure the zoning at your site matches your building’s intended use. For example, if you’re planning to use a steel building as an automotive repair shop, you’ll need to make sure the zoning allows for commercial, as opposed to residential, use. Verify site setbacks and allowed max size limitations and if there are any restrictions for this type of metal construction.

You also need to verify any wind load, snow load or other building code requirements in place in your area before moving forward with engineered drawings. Making any errors in these areas can lead to delays, complications and even potential legal issues.

2. Obtain financing if necessary.

Many people lack the funding to finance a pre-engineered steel building kit outright, but loan options are often available. Traditional bank or credit union loans, construction loans, and, in some cases, Small Business Administration loans are just a few of the financing options that may be obtainable depending on your building’s intended use and your credit and financial history, among other factors.

3. Prepare the site & lay a strong foundation.

Prepare the site with consideration to drainage, sun exposure, access and future expansion. A strong building foundation enhances structural stability by supporting the weight of the building once raised. A good foundation design considers your site-specific soil condition which will support the concrete foundation. Taking the time to lay a proper foundation reduces the risk of settling or shifting, which can compromise your building’s integrity. Doing so also keeps your building strong and structurally sound with respect for the specific environmental and climate conditions of your area.

4. Choose a reputable supplier.

Not all metal building kit suppliers meet the same standards and choosing one based on price alone can come back to bite you. When choosing a steel building supplier, consider its history in the industry. Check out recent consumer reviews, too, to get a sense of how they treat their clients and how satisfied past customers are with their purchases.

Erecting Quick-Ship Steel Buildings in Popular Sizes

Need a steel building you can use within a matter of weeks, rather than months? Consider a quick-ship or bolt-up steel building kit, which allows for easy, fast erection with minimal tools and no welding. Available in many of today’s most popular sizes, quick-ship steel building kits are an easy, cost-effective way to get your building up and operational with minimal delay.

Erecting Larger DIY Metal Building Kits

Prefabricated steel building kits are also smart investments if you’re seeking a bigger, more customized metal building to meet your needs. When you buy a DIY steel building kit, the fabrication process takes place before it even arrives on your build site, leading to an easier assembly process while slashing erection times and associated expenses.

Whether you’re seeking a quick-ship metal building to use as soon as possible or a larger option that meets clear specifications, doing your due diligence ensures adherence to regulations, reduces the risk of complications arising, and, ultimately, leads to a faster, smoother and easier erection process.
