Prefabricated Steel Home in Hartsel, Colorado

Metal Building Outlet was the proud provider of this pre-engineered steel residence in Hartsel, Colorado, sending the building kit to the central Colorado community in mid-August of 2025.

Climate-controlled and designed to impress, the modern, contemporary metal home spans 1,040 square feet and sits atop piers of various heights to maximize stability. Functional, versatile and aesthetically pleasing, the steel home has an interior mezzanine serving as the main living area and 2’ overhangs on all four sides. While the overhangs add visual interest to the home’s exterior, they also serve several practical purposes, creating both covered outdoor storage areas and a dry, covered entry area.

The roof of the metal residence has a 6:12 pitch, which is steeper than many metal building roofs and facilities proper drainage. This is particularly important given the home’s high-altitude location above 8,800 square feet.

An insulation package keeps the metal home comfortable and appropriate for year-round use. The roof holds a high R-value, R-49 multi-layer fiberglass insulation system, while the walls hold a single-layer and thermal tape R-30 insulation system.  Beyond creating a more comfortable environment, the insulation package also leads to other benefits, like lowered heating and cooling bills, enhanced sound control and reduced condensation, to name a few.

Economical, sustainable and easy to customize, steel homes and “barndominiums,” the latter of which merges a residential area with some other type of functional space, have become increasingly popular among homebuyers seeking durable, low-maintenance homes they can customize as they see fit. This particular metal home is ideal for life in central Colorado, where cold winter temperatures and considerable seasonal snowfall might compromise the structural integrity of traditional homes made of wood or other less-resilient materials.
